Not one size fits all. An honest comparison of group and private Spanish lessons — what each delivers, what it costs, and how to decide without wasting your time or money.
It's the question I get every week: 'Should I do group classes or go private?' There's no universal right answer — but there IS a right answer for you, depending on your goals, budget, and personality. After 12 years of teaching Spanish to students from more than 40 countries, here's what I've learned.
What Are Group Spanish Classes?
Our group classes run Monday through Friday, 4 hours per day, with a maximum of 4 students. That's not a typo — 4 students, not 14. We believe genuine progress requires the teacher to know you, not just manage you.
A typical week costs $3,700 MXN (roughly $190 USD). In that week, you'll cover 20 hours of instruction, complete structured grammar progressions, and — just as importantly — practice speaking with other real humans who are also figuring out Spanish.
What Are Private Spanish Lessons?
Private lessons are one-on-one sessions with a senior teacher. You set the schedule, the pace, and the focus. If you only have mornings free, if you need Business Spanish for a specific job, or if you want to prepare for the DELE B2 exam in 3 weeks — private is the format that makes it possible.
Our private rate is $3,200 MXN for 10 hours. That's affordable compared to private tutoring rates in the US or Europe, and the quality of instruction is the same.
Side-by-Side Comparison
- Speed of progress: Private classes win by a significant margin. One hour of private instruction typically covers what takes 2–3 hours in a group setting.
- Social learning: Group classes win. The dynamic of learning alongside peers creates motivation, shared laughter, and real conversational practice.
- Flexibility: Private lessons win. You can schedule 7am or 7pm, adjust content mid-week, and skip topics you already master.
- Cost efficiency: Group classes win. You get structured 20-hour weeks for less money per hour than private sessions.
- Accountability: Tie. Both formats work, but group classes create social commitment that keeps many students consistent.
Who Should Choose Group Classes?
- You're traveling solo and want to meet people
- You're on a budget but still want real structure
- You learn well through conversation and enjoy a social atmosphere
- You're a beginner or intermediate learner following a standard curriculum
- You have a standard week-long or two-week trip
Who Should Choose Private Lessons?
- You have a specific goal: DELE exam, business Spanish, medical Spanish, etc.
- You need maximum flexibility in scheduling
- You're advanced and standard group curriculum feels too slow
- You have a very short trip (3–5 days) and need to maximize every hour
- You have specific learning challenges where individual attention matters
The Hybrid Approach: The Best of Both Worlds
Many of our most successful students combine both formats: group classes in the morning for structure and community, then 30–60 minutes of private coaching in the afternoon to work on their specific weak points. It's more intensive, but it's the fastest way to advance if you have the time and budget.
